报告人简介:刘方明,华中科技大学教授、博导,国家高层次人才特殊支持计划(中组部“万人计划”)青年拔尖人才、湖北省“楚天学者”、微软亚洲研究院“铸星计划”访问学者。于清华大学、香港科技大学获学士和博士学位,后作为加拿大多伦多大学访问学者。在云计算、绿色计算、互联网“云-端”融合的分布式系统领域主持国家自然科学基金、承担973计划青年科学家项目、华为公司合作项目等,并作为骨干参与国家自然科学基金重点项目、重点国际合作研究项目、863计划项目等,发表了一系列IEEE/ACM Transactions以及重要国际会议论文等,并获IEEE GLOBECOM等多项国际会议最佳论文奖;作为IEEE高级会员,担任《IEEE Network Magazine》和《IEEE Systems Journal》客座编委、《Frontiers of Computer Science》青年编委、《EAIEndorsed Transactions on Collaborative Computing》主编、10余种IEEE/ACM Transactions审稿人;担任重要国际会议ACM Multimedia 2014和2016、ACM e-Energy 2016、IEEE INFOCOM 2013-2017、ICDCS 2015-2016、ICNP 2014、IWQoS 2016-2017、GLOBECOM 2012-2016等10余个大会程序委员、ICNP 2016 Poster/Demo共同主席、第十四届全国软件与应用学术会议NASAC 2015程序委员会副主席、第九届绿色、普适与云计算国际会议GPC 2014大会程序委员会主席;担任中国计算机学会(CCF)互联网专委会委员、分布式计算与系统专委会委员、系统软件专委会委员,入选CCF高级会员、会员代表和ACM China SIGCOMM Chapter委员。
报告摘要:Green computing or Green IT, refers to a large collectionof research and practice of designing, manufacturing, utilizing and disposingof computers, storage, networking and communications systems, in striving forenvironmentally sustainable computing. This is one of the most critical, yetperhaps least explored topics in computing and communications today. Inparticular, large-scale datacenters --- the fundamental utility and infrastructurethathost and enablea wide range of cloud computing, big data, HPC and IoTapplications --- have incurred tremendous energy consumption, electricity cost,and high carbon emission worldwide.Why, when, where and how to evolve towardsgreen datacenters for achieving an era of green computing? In this talk, weexploredatacenterenergy management problem in a "Step-by-Step Approach", from power monitoringoflegacy datacenters, topower-performance tradeoff optimization ofgeo-distributed datacenters, as well as their interaction with smart gridsandrenewable energy resources(e.g., solar, wind, water and heat) to shape a"Green World" for the nextdecade.Concrete case studieson new energy-awarearchitectures,co-design of software-hardware systems, and emerging techniqueswill beillustrated to bridge theoryand practice, so as to foster comprehensive researchopportunities and cross-disciplinaryresearch collaboration.
